Pathways to the Profession of Law
Throughout your legal education, we are here to help you envision a career in law and choose the steps that will get you there. Of course, each student has different needs and interests, and our curriculum reflects that. We offer a large variety of courses to help you prepare to put the law to work, whether practicing law or working as a professional in another field. The exciting challenge you face is to choose the courses—and other learning opportunities such as competitions and externships—that will serve your particular goals, which might include preparing for the bar exam, building a repertoire of legal skills, getting a well-rounded, liberal arts style legal education or specializing in a particular area of law.

To help you chart your individual course after the first year of required courses, we have identified a variety of pathways through the curriculum for you to consider. Even if you decide to combine multiple pathways or change directions – which often happens – these materials are designed to help you maintain your forward momentum.
Regardless of which pathway you follow at William Mitchell, you can count on an active, intellectually demanding learning process with plenty of variety, including skill-building, real-world experiences, and scholarly research and reflection. Each day of your education will move you closer to becoming a well-educated, well-prepared member of the legal profession.
