Co-Ed Flag Football William Mitchell�s Athletic Council is pleased to present co-ed flag football for the student population this fall. The best part is that games will be held on the school�s front lawn! Games will be played on Saturdays, starting September 6 or 13 and going until October 25. We want 8 teams, with a minimum of five players for each team. The fee is $10 per team and all are welcome to play. If you field a team, the captains should email their rosters to Ben Spector at benjamin.spector@wmitchell.edu or Patrick Helwig at patrick.helwig@wmitchell.edu or Becky Piraino at rebecca.piraino@wmitchell.edu by no later than Tuesday, September 2. The $10 fee must be paid by the first game. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Once we have everyone�s roster, we will email the captains of each team with details and rules.

Important Notice from the Security Office

Today, sometime between 8 am and 12 noon, a WM staff vehicle that was parked in the front main Summit lot near Victoria had the catalytic convertor stolen from it. This particular vehicle is an SUV which has a higher ground clearance that makes for an easier target for thief�s to crawl under and then use either a cordless sawzall type device to cut the convertor off or a socket wrench to unbolt the convertor. Catalytic convertors contain platinum and typically these stolen convertors are brought to a scrap metal dealer for money. We have notified the St. Paul PD and filed a report. Please immediately contact WM security if you see any suspicious activity in the lots.

The William Mitchell Chapter of the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy (ACS) is currently seeking new members. Reminder: Invitation to Participate in the Student to Student Mentoring Program

Incoming students must send their information in by 8/28

Incoming students received an email before the year started, sent by Dean Thompson, on behalf of Student Bar Association President Elise Peterson, extending an invitation to join the William Mitchell Student to Student Mentoring Program and be assigned a student mentor. If you have not emailed Elise Peterson, nor signed up for the program at the Orientation Fair, and if you are still interested in being assigned a student mentor, send an email to elise.peterson@wmitchell.edu before midnight on August 28th.

The email should include the following information: your name, the section you will be in, whether you are full time or part time, and whether this is your first or second career. Mentees who signed up after August 18th will be paired with a mentor over the weekend. If you have not heard from Elise by September 1st, contact her to make sure she has all your information.

The pizza kick-off event for the mentoring program will be on Friday September 5th between 4-6pm in the Auditorium. You are welcome to come, even if your mentor cannot make it and is meeting with you at a different point during the week. Tax Section Tax Challenge Competition

Deadline for Entries November 7, 2008
 An alternative to traditional moot court competitions, the Law Student Tax Challenge asks two-person teams of students to solve a cutting-edge and complex business problem that might arise in everyday tax practice. The top teams selected by a panel of judges then present their solutions to some of the top tax practitioners in the country. Teams are initially evaluated on two criteria: a memorandum to a senior partner and a letter to the client explaining the result. The competition offers motivated students a tremendous opportunity to learn more about tax law, interact with professionals in the world of tax, and earn credit while doing so. Tax Section  Public Service Fellowship

Applications Deadline for the 2009 Fellowships October 15, 2008
The ABA Section of Taxation is pleased to announce a new Public Service Fellowship award program, developed to address the need for tax legal service assistance around the country, and to foster an interest in tax-related public service for those lawyers who participate. The Public Service Fellowships are open to recent J.D. and LL.M. graduates and judicial clerks who commit to working in tax-related public interest, non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations for two years. Applicants must select and arrange employment with those organizations prior to applying for the Fellowship, and must confirm that their work will involve taxation or the administration of tax law. Up to two Fellowships will be awarded each year, and the Section will fund the salary, benefits and law school debt service (when applicable) for each awardee. Scott Ritter, author of Target Iran, Waging Peace, and Iran Confidential was one of the UNSCOM's most senior weapons inspectors in Iraq between 1991 and 1998, after having served eight years as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. Ritter, who famously and accurately argued that Iraq no longer had weapons of mass destruction, stated in an interview with Amy Goodman, "There is no doubt in my mind that the United States is planning right now, as we speak, a military strike against Iran.

Adjunct Professor and Coach Ed Matthews (�03) will host two informational sessions for all interested students. This moot court is open to all students who have either completed or are concurrently enrolled in (1) Writing & Representation: Advocacy; and (2) either Agency, Partnerships, and LLCs or UCC � Sales.

BENEFITS:� The Corporate Appellate Law Moot Court is a competition for William Mitchell students interested in the following benefits:

DETAILS:� Participants will begin by researching a legal issue and practicing their oral advocacy skills. In the late fall, participants are paired into two-person teams and write appellate briefs. The teams then present oral arguments to panels of judges. The winning team will have the opportunity to compete in the Ruby R. Vale Corporate Law Moot Court Competition at Widener University School of Law in Delaware.

Excellence Development Program Kick-Off (counts toward the Excellence Development Certificate)

The Excellence Development Program provides students opportunities to attend short sessions throughout the year to develop skills useful in law school and legal practice. Time is a valuable commodity in law school, and these sessions are intended to give students valuable information in a short amount of time from both offices on campus and lawyers. This program is open to first, second, third, and fourth year students who would like additional skills in networking, legal writing, career development, and lawyering, among others. Students can attend any number of presentations, they are all open to the student body. Students who attend 10 of the 15 sessions (2/3) will receive a certificate in Excellence Development at the end of the year from the SBA. The Excellence Development Program Kick-off will be September 2nd from 5-6pm in the Kelley Boardroom (Food will be served). Several of the Deans will be speaking briefly about success in law school and in the legal community. The kick-off event counts toward the certificate. Jessup International Moot Court

Philip C, Jessup International Law Moot Court 2008-2009

What is Jessup Moot Court? The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is organized by the International Law Students Association (ILSA). The Competition is named after Philip C. Jessup, who once served on the International Court of Justice. Teams from law schools around the world enter the competition, which is comprised of two parts: a written memorial and an oral argument. The competition involves arguing a hypothetical case on issues of international law as if before the International Court of Justice.

Why Should I Try-Out for Jessup Moot Court? Some of the advantages to the Jessup experience include:

Jessup Moot Court is a prestigious moot court recognized by attorneys and practitioners around the world - an excellent addition to a resume!
Members gain a foundational knowledge of public international law.
The memorial-writing process and oral argument are excellent ways to improve your writing, research and oral advocacy skills.
Members of Jessup Moot Court each receive two credits for their contribution.

What is the process for trying out for Jessup Moot Court? Try-outs are a two-part process: a written submission and an oral argument.

Writing samples. The judging panel will accept writing samples (your WRAP motion, for example) from Oct 1-5. Writing samples can be turned in to the Jessup Moot Court box outside of Room 254.
Oral argument. When you submit your written submissions, you will sign up for a short oral argument which will be held the evening of Oct. 8 and the afternoon of Oct 11. The 2008-2009 Jessup team will be announced the following week.

Interested in brushing up on your trial skills? This fall WMCL will again participate in the national Arbitration Competition sponsored by the ABA law student division. Enrolled students can receive 1-3 credits, pass/fail, depending upon level of participation. Regional competition will likely be held in Chicago November 15-16; nationals in San Antonio, Texas, in January. Most activities will be scheduled ad hoc, and students who have a conflict with the scheduled Monday time slot can be accommodated. You must be a 2L or a 3L to register. Write-On Competition - WM Journal of Law & Practice

The Editors-in-Chief of the William Mitchell Journal of Law and Practice seek qualified and highly motivated second, third and fourth year law student staff members for the 2008-2009 academic year.

The mission of the Journal of Law and Practice is to produce insightful articles on the forefront of legal practice, bringing together ideas and criticisms of current legislation and emerging decisions and its affect upon the practice of law.

Applicants must submit a 10 to 12 page written case note, with at least 5 but no more than 7 additional pages of endnotes. Accompanying materials include an anonymous resume and anonymous cover letter indicating the applicant�s interest in the new Journal. (Please exclude name, GPA, class rank and other identifying information.) The case note topic is based on the applicant�s choice of one of three cases recently decided by the Minnesota Supreme Court or the Minnesota Court of Appeals, as selected by the Editors-in-Chief. Applicants may also submit a prior Journal of Law and Practice or Law Review case note submission, revised to fit the 10 to 12 (17-19 with endnotes) page limit, in place of the chosen cases. Please email Charles Alden (charles.alden@wmitchell.edu) by September 5th at 5 P.M. if you would like to participate in the write-on competition. Students will receive an email on the morning of September 6th with the list of cases, as well as the parameters for writing the case note and submitting it anonymously. Applicants will have until October 2nd to complete and submit their case note and application materials. Applicants will be evaluated and selected based on their case note score and application. Cover letter and resume will be considered in instances of a tie between applicants. Child Advocacy Coalition (CAC) Now Open for Membership

We're pleased to introduce a new WCML student organization, the Child Advocacy Coalition (CAC). The CAC aims to preserve and protect the rights of children--our most vulnerable citizens--through proprietary legal research, volunteerism, legislative analysis and reform, and courtroom advocacy. Membership is open to all students. If you're interested in gaining legal writing, research or advocacy experience through volunteerism and share our concern about the legal rights of children, the CAC welcomes your participation. ACLU/RNC Opportunities for law students

Assist with Legal Intake during the convention 8/30-9/4
American Civil Liberties Union - RNC legal intake The ACLU is in need of 15 volunteer law students to assist on the ground during the RNC Convention (August 30th through September 4th). We will need volunteers to be stationed at the Hennepin and Ramsey County Jails and courthouses to do in-person intake if people get arrested and are in need of legal assistance for their arraignments. Volunteer attorneys will be providing the legal advice and representation for those arrested as part of the RNC protests. Students with previous intake experience are preferred. Volunteer training details available from project contact. Open to 2nd Year Plus Students Volunteer Hours Needed: 10-20 total Contact Jane Evans in the MJF office, room 253, for referral to ACLU. This academic year NALSA will be participating in the 2009 National Moot Court Competition as well as the 2009 Federal Bar Association Annual Meeting in New Mexico. NALSA is currently planning a tribal court visit to William Mitchell.

The Minnesota American Indian Bar Association is now taking applications for the 2008-2009 scholarship award. Applications are due October 15, 2008. The applications are available on the MAIBA website.

Metro Transit Student Bus Passes Will Be On Sale Next Week

Passes are $150 for the fall semester
Students can purchase Metro Transit Bus Passes for $150 for the fall semester (ending in December), starting on Monday August 18th. The Student Bar Association will be selling the passes at the SBA Table (2-7pm on Mondays), and in the SBA Used Bookstore. The passes will work on all metro area lines. Here�s what you need to know:

First Statement
The first tuition statement you receive:

� includes summer charges and payments and Fall 2008 charges and fees;

� but does not include payments or financial aid for Fall 2008.

Fall scholarships and loans will be applied on or after August 28, 2008.

Due Dates

If you have a Full Payment Plan agreement with the Finance Office and you

� do not receive scholarships or loans: pay-in-full by August 21, 2008.

� do receive scholarships and/or loans which pay your total balance in full: loans and scholarships will be applied no later than September 1, 2008.

If you have an Installment Payment Plan agreement with the Finance Office and you

� do not receive scholarships or loans:

o pay the first 25% installment by August 21, 2008

o pay the second 25% installment by September 1, 2008

o pay the third 25% installment by October 1, 2008 and

o pay the fourth 25% installment by November 1, 2008.

� do receive scholarships or loans:

o pay the first and second installment, 50% of the remaining balance, by September 1, 2008

o pay the third 25% installment by October 1, 2008 and

o pay the fourth 25% installment by November 1, 2008.

Scholarship and Loan payments
Scholarship and Loan payments are applied to your student account on or after August 28, 2008 at the close of the registration drop-add date. As first time Federal Stafford loan recipients at Mitchell, you must have completed the loan program entrance counseling session at Mapping Your Future before loan payments are applied to your account. If you are also expecting to receive a Grad-PLUS Loan,
look for a combined Stafford/ Grad-PLUS session at Mapping Your Future.

Credit Balance Refund Checks Available September 4th
If your financial aid payments result in a credit balance on your account (most typically this would be used for living expenses), you can pick up a check from the Finance Office, room 276 on the second floor of the LEC building, on Thursday, September 4^th between 9am and 7pm. Regular office hours, 8:30am � 5:00pm resume on Friday September 5, 2008. Remember to bring a picture ID.

Application Deadline Tuesday, September 16, 2008
The 2009 online application is now available for two-year fellowships that will commence in September of 2009 - August 2011. Review the application at: http://info.equaljusticeworks.org/fellowships. The process is time-consuming, so begin working on this ASAP. This process is for 3L/4L graduating law students, recent law graduates, or experienced attorneys. A 3L/4L student must be able to graduate and begin the fellowship in September 2009. Hard copy documents must be received by September 16th by 5 pm EDT.
