Description: Examine 20th and 21st-century genocides to understand decisions to eliminate innocent people; the legal structures that supported genocide; laws and policies of peacekeeping; and post-genocide issues of justice, prosecution, and reparations. Students will participate in advocacy to prevent genocide, work on programs to raise awareness about conflict, and research lawyers’ involvement in both supporting and preventing genocide. The course includes lecture, discussion, student presentations, films, and guest lectures by genocide survivors, lawyers who have participated in post-genocide tribunals, and leaders of humanitarian aid organizations.
