How she spends her days

“Each day we have a 45-minute lecture, followed by 45-minute small group classes. We break up into groups of 12, which all include one British student who attends BPP Law School, where we are studying. Each British student brings a unique perspective to our small group discussions and contributes valuable information on the U.K. system in regards to our daily topics. We then have another 45-minute class where we report what we discussed in our small group sessions. We then break for lunch and repeat our morning activities in the afternoons.

Guest speakers

Last Thursday (June 11), we had our last Comparative Counterterrorism course. We ended the course with the privilege of a visit from Tim Weiner, a New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author who recently wrote the book Legacy of Ashes: the History of the CIA. Mr. Weiner has amazing knowledge and insight into the CIA and its fight against terrorism. His experiences reporting on the CIA and terrorism throughout the world were stunning.

Comparing U.S. vs. U.K. corporate governance

On Monday (June 15), we began our Comparative Corporate Governance class with Professor Thuy Vo. Professor Vo was a corporate and securities attorney for an international law firm and was also senior counsel and finance director of a Fortune 500 company.

She is joined by William Mitchell alumni and board members Lynn Anderson ’80, the executive vice president and general counsel of Holiday, a Fortune 100 private company, as well as Louis Ainsworth ’77, senior vice president and general counsel of Pentair.

We have been learning about the differences between corporate governance in the United States and the United Kingdom, with a special emphasis on abuse of corporate power.

Weekends

We had Friday (June 12) off, and some people took trips to Paris and Scotland. The rest of us stayed in beautiful London to see shows, walk beautiful parks, and enjoy the night life.
