Mitchell grad Lori Swanson ’95 elected Minnesota Attorney General
William Mitchell graduate Lori Swanson ’95 was elected Tuesday as Minnesota
Attorney General. Swanson, who graduated from William Mitchell magna cum laude
in 1995, will replace Attorney General Mike Hatch, who ran for governor.
Swanson joins a small group of people to hold the office--only eight people have
had the title of Minnesota attorney general in the last 67 years.
Swanson has served as Minnesota solicitor general since January 2003. She also
currently serves as chair of the Consumer Advisory Council of the Federal
Reserve Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., which advises the chairman of
the Federal Reserve Board and Board Governors on consumer protection matters.
Prior, she served as deputy attorney general in the Minnesota Attorney General’s
Office for four years. Before joining the Attorney General’s Office, she was an
attorney in private practice, focusing on the rights of patients and
policyholders against HMOs and insurance companies.
As attorney general, Swanson will be the chief legal officer for the state of
Minnesota. The Attorney General’s Office represents more than 100 state
agencies, boards, and commissions and is the state’s chief policy maker and law
enforcer in the important areas of consumer protection, antitrust enforcement
and charities’ regulation.
