Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh, an historic, cosmopolitan, and cultured city, is perched on a series of extinct volcanoes and rocky crags. The city is divided into two distinct parts. To the north is Grecian-style New Town. To the south the lofty medieval buildings of Old Town wind down the Royal Mile. Above it all stands Edinburgh Castle.

Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh like no other castle in Scotland or all of the British Isles. Over 1,000 years of history sits on top of the famous Edinburgh rock.

Edinburgh has more restaurants per capita than any other city in the United Kingdom, and it has Scotland's most famous shopping thoroughfare, Princes Street. Its natural splendor includes Holyrood Park—Europe's largest city park, as well as the Meadows, Princes Street Gardens, and Royal Botanic Gardens. Edinburgh also is home to numerous international arts, film, TV, and science festivals in the summer and fall.

Established more than 400 years ago, the university's campus is spread throughout the city, and it includes many landmarks. It can count among its former students philosopher David Hume, John Witherspoon, a signatory of the American Declaration of Independence, and scientist Charles Darwin.

London

London Study Centre

England

Designed specifically for students from all around the world who are studying abroad in London, participants in the London Course Session will study in the Florida State University London Study Centre. A large part of the building dates back to the 17th century and is registered on the British National Heritage List, but it has been completely refurbished since it opened in 1994 to include the latest technology and modern amenities to meet students' needs.

The centre is conveniently located in the heart of Bloomsbury, one of London’s most fashionable districts, putting the centre just 400 yards from the esteemed British Museum and Tottenham Court Road underground station, and within walking distance of London’s famous theater district, Covent Garden, Soho, the National Gallery, and the best shopping in the capital.

Bloomsbury District

The development of Bloomsbury began in the early 1660’s and soon became one of London’s most fashionable districts and a place of residence for rich merchants and aristocrats with elegant squares characterizing the area.

Bloomsbury is now dominated by two great institutions of learning and scholarship—the British Museum and the University of London. Both institutions have impressive libraries and reading rooms. Karl Marx, when he was an obscure and impoverished refugee, wrote Das Kapital under the great dome of the British Museum Reading Room.
