What is Interlibrary Loan?  Students, faculty, and staff of William Mitchell College of Law may borrow circulating items from other libraries if they are not available in our library.  Patrons from other libraries may go through their home library to borrow circulating items from us.  Items that do not circulate may be photocopied (within copyright law constraints) and delivered via e-mail, fax or regular mail.

How do I request an item?  If we do not own the material you want, or if it is not currently available, you may fill out an online ILL request form (see box to the right).  If you are unsure of the citation for the material you need, please ask for assistance in person or via e-mail or phone from a member of the reference staff.

How soon do I get the item? Materials generally arrive within a week, but may take longer, depending on where the item is coming from and the lending library's response time.  You may check on the status of an ILL request by contacting the circulation staff.

How will I know when my item is here?  You will be notified by e-mail or telephone when your material arrives.  Please indicate on your request form which notification method you prefer.

How long can I keep the item?  The length of time you may keep an item borrowed through ILL depends on the lending library's policies.  Typically, ILL materials may be kept for at least two weeks, but rarely longer than one month.  You will be told the due date when you pick up the item.  You may also request to renew the item by notifying our circulation staff before the due date arrives.  If the lending library agrees, the loan period will be extended.

Where should I return my ILL materials?  Materials borrowed through ILL are to be returned to the circulation desk at the Warren E. Burger Library.

How much does ILL cost?  ILL is a free service to William Mitchell students, faculty and staff, but the borrower is expected to pay for any lost or damaged materials and for any overdue fines for materials returned after the due date.  The fine for overdue ILL materials is determined by the lending library.

What if I think the library should buy the item for its collection?  If you think the library should purchase an item you borrowed through ILL for our collection, please let us know when you return the material, or contact Anne Poulter, Assistant Director, Collection Resources.

I'm an attorney, alumni or member of the public, can I borrow through ILL?  Warren E. Burger ILL borrowing services are available to William Mitchell campus community members only.  Others may obtain ILL services to borrow from other libraries through their firm or local public library.

What if I have more questions?  If you have any questions about Interlibrary Loan services, please contact the Circulation Desk Staff.
