The 2008 Law Review Banquet
Current and former Law Review members, William Mitchell faculty, and others will come together on Friday, April 11, to celebrate the success of Volume 34. This year's event will be held at the Town & Country Club in St. Paul. The Editorial Board of Volume 34 is honored to present Judge Paul A. Magnuson '63 as the Banquet's keynote speaker. The Board is also proud to present this year's Marcy S. Wallace Award for Excellence in Leadership to Judge Matthew E. Johnson '92.
Paul Magnuson
Upon graduating from William Mitchell, Judge Magnuson practiced with the South St. Paul law firm of LeVander, Gillen, Miller & Magnuson for eighteen years. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan appointed him to the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. He assumed the position of Chief Judge in 1994 upon Judge Diana Murphy's elevation to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Magnuson served as Chief Judge for eight years, taking senior status in 2002.
Judge Magnuson still maintains an active trial schedule, while serving on the Board of Directors of the Federal Judges Association and as Chair of the Eighth Circuit Education Committee. He previously served as Chair of the Committee on International Judicial Relations, having been appointed by former Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist in 1999.
Matthew Johnson
After graduating from William Mitchell, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of Volume 18, Judge Johnson clerked for Hon. Charles R. Wolle (S.D. Iowa) and Hon. David R. Hansen of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Since 1994, Johnson has been in private practice—first with the former Popham, Haik, Schnobrich & Kaufman firm, then with Smith Parker PLLP, and finally with Halleland Lewis Nilan & Johnson, PA. On October 4, 2007, Governor Pawlenty appointed him to one of the new judgeships on the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
Judge Johnson has been active in the Twin Cities community as a former member of the Second Judicial District's Ethics Committee, a member of the St. Paul Civil Service Commission, and a volunteer attorney with Legal Access Point.
