Since William Mitchell College of Law was founded more than a
century ago, flexibility has been a cornerstone of its approach to
legal education. Students can choose to attend William Mitchell full
or part time and have a rich curriculum from which to choose their
courses. Full-time and adjunct faculty members teach both full-time
and part-time students. That means, whether you attend law school
part time or full time, you will receive the same high-quality legal
education.
Classes are typically offered in three general time blocks, Monday - Friday.

* First-year students in the day sections may need to take an evening course once a week to fulfill a skills requirement through WRAP (our legal writing and representation program).
At William Mitchell, students have multiple scheduling options for required and core courses, which are offered morning, late afternoon, and evening. Upper-level electives are primarily offered in the evening to take advantage of the rich professional experience of our adjunct faculty. Flexible scheduling enables you to enhance your education through the pursuit of real-world legal experience.
Attending William Mitchell part time allows many students to continue in their careers or meet family or financial demands. Students who continue in an existing career or job can maintain professional ties that often prove invaluable upon graduation.
Part-time students typically take three to four courses per semester and are in class three to five days or evenings per week, with some taking advantage of our limited upper-level Saturday electives and our seven-week summer session. Part-time students often graduate within four years and must graduate within six years.
Though many of our students have been out of undergraduate institutions for fewer than five years, many others come from long-standing professional careers, parenting, or both. Our student population ranges in age from 21 to 60, and about 37 percent is enrolled in our part-time program.
Many William Mitchell students choose to attend law school full time so they can start their legal careers as soon as possible. Most full-time students graduate in three years, although a few choose to graduate in two and a half years. All students must graduate within six years.
Full-time students typically take five courses per semester and are in class five days or evenings per week. Many full-time students take evening classes so they can use their daytime hours for clerkships, clinics, or law-related employment.
Because William Mitchell has a single set of admission standards, students may select their schedules only after they have been accepted. Once they complete their core courses, they can switch between attending full and part time as their needs change.
Students choose to change their course loads for a variety of reasons, including job, family, or financial reasons, as well as the desire to accept various law-related externships and jobs. Many students who initially enroll full time switch to part time during their upper-level years so they can enhance their education by accepting a full-time law-related job during the day.
