Short biography of Dean Janus
President and Dean Eric S. Janus has served on the William Mitchell College of Law faculty since 1984 and was named vice dean in 2004. Previously, Dean Janus served as a staff lawyer and managing attorney with the Minneapolis Legal Aid Society. His research focuses on the use of extraordinary governmental power to confine individuals preventively, a subject addressed in his most recent book, Failure to Protect: America's Sexual Predator Laws and the Rise of the Preventive State (Cornell University Press, 2006). A respected leader in the legal community and a nationally recognized legal scholar, Dean Janus received the David Graven Award for Public Service from the Minnesota State Bar Association and has twice received Mitchell's Outstanding Teacher Award. He received his B.A. degree from Carleton College and his J.D. degree from Harvard University.
