Hubbard Broadcasting and its subsidiary Reelz

James A. Barnum is vice president and deputy general counsel of Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc. and its subsidiary ReelzChannel, LLC, and an adjunct professor of law at William Mitchell College of Law. He is also past chair of the Art & Entertainment Law Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association.

Hubbard Broadcasting is a privately held company that operates thirteen television stations, four radio stations, an international video licensing company, and several related businesses. ReelzChannel is a nationally distributed cable and satellite network based in Los Angeles covering the motion picture industry.

Mr. Barnum practices, teaches and lectures in virtually all areas of media, First Amendment, newsgathering, and entertainment law, as well as employment law and FCC compliance, including:

  • First Amendment, Defamation, and Newsgathering Law, Investigative Journalism;
  • Privacy and Publicity Rights;
  • Film, Video and Music Rights and Licensing;
  • Program Acquisition and Programming Contracts; Syndicated Programming;
  • Production Contracts;
  • Negotiating and Drafting Talent (AFTRA and non_AFTRA) Contracts;
  • Intellectual Property (Copyright & Trademark) Protection and Licensing;
  • Employment Law;
  • FCC Compliance; and
  • Litigation Management

Mr. Barnum received his bachelorĂ‚’s and masterĂ‚’s degrees from the University of Minnesota and his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from William Mitchell College of Law. Before joining Hubbard Broadcasting in 1991, he clerked for United States District Judge Edward J. DeVitt (D. Minn.) and engaged in the private practice of law with Leonard, Street and Deinard (Minneapolis) and Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue (Austin, TX). He is admitted to practice in Minnesota, Texas, Oregon, Colorado, and the District of Columbia.
