Our Writing & Representation program provides students with the research, communication, legal writing, negotiating, and oral advocacy skills that are essential to being an effective lawyer. During the program you will use several textbooks that were written by William Mitchell faculty members and are used by law schools across the country including The Process of Legal Research, now in its sixth edition.

Writing & Representation: Advice & Persuasion (WRAP)

As a first-year student, you will participate in Writing & Representation: Advice & Persuasion, where you will master research and writing skills, client interviewing and cou nseling, contract negotiation, dispute mediation, and pretrial litigation. This firsthand experience will bring the law to life.

Advocacy

In your second or third year, you will take Advocacy, which will introduce you to advanced research skills, conducting discovery, examining witnesses, making opening and closing statements, writing appellate briefs, and presenting appellate oral arguments. In this course you will hone your skills and learn how to conduct yourself in a courtroom setting using our four high-tech courtrooms.

Instruction in this series of courses incorporates large-group discussions and demonstrations, writing workshops, simulated interaction exercises, and individual conferences. The teaching-team includes full-time faculty members, adjunct professors who are practicing lawyers and judges, reference librarians, and writing tutors.
