You can now register on the web for clinics and externships at or after your assigned registration time. Waiting lists for the clinics and externships are maintained. The registrar contacts students by phone or e-mail if a spot becomes available.

Register or waitlist for clinics and externships during online registration. If a clinic or externship is offered for different credit levels (i.e., District Court Externship - 2, 3, or 4 credits), select the desired credit level and Add the course. With the exception of Work of the Lawyer, students enrolling for two credits must complete 100 hours of work; three credits, 145 hours; and four credits, 190 hours.   If the course is full, you may add your name to the waitlist by clicking on the Waitlist button.

ADR Mediation Externship

Externship may be taken for 2 or 3 credits. For 2-credits, students will put in approximately 100 hours per semester and need a 3 to 4 hour block every week for off-campus mediations. For 3-credits, students need an additional 50 hours per semester. Registered students must complete a placement questionnaire by August 1, 2007.  Registered students may contact Jean Backes at jean.backes@wmitchell.edu to obtain both the Placement Preference & Availability Form and the Placement Questionnaire Form.

Administrative Law Externship

You can take the Administrative Law Externship for two credits in one semester. Or, you can take it for two consecutive semesters, earning two credits per semester for a total of four credits.  

If you are taking the externship for the first time, enter course number 8002.  Students may register for a second semester of this externship by obtaining approval from the instructor, in the Legal Practice Center.

Civil Advocacy Clinic, Community Development Clinic,
Court of Appeals Externship, District Court Externship, Misdemeanor Clinic

When you register for these clinics and externships, enter the course number, select the appropriate credit level, and click the Add button.   

Criminal Appeals Clinic

All students must contact Jean Backes to complete a Conflict of Interest form prior to the first class session of the Criminal Appeals Clinic. There are no exceptions to the prerequisites for this clinic.

Independent Externship/Clinic and
Clinic Student Director Credits

Independent clinic and clinic student director credits are approved by Professor Knapp in the Legal Practice Center. Obtain Professor Knapp's initials on an Add/Drop form. Submit the approved Add/Drop form to the registrar. More information on the independent program.

Legal Assistance to Minnesota Prisoners (LAMP)

Final semester seniors cannot register for LAMP if it is their first semester taking this clinic as the cases may require follow-up after graduation. Students who are currently enrolled for fall semester are eligible to continue LAMP for spring or summer semester.

LAMP, Business Law, Civil Advocacy, Immigration Law Clinics – Second Semester Credits

Students may register for additional credits after completing one semester of these clinics by obtaining approval from the instructor in the Legal Practice Center. Obtain the instructor's initials on an Add/Drop form. Submit the approved Add/Drop form to the Registrar.

Work of the Lawyer

The Work of the Lawyer seminar is two credits (course # 3290). In addition to registering for the seminar, you must complete the field component of the course.

If you do not currently work in the legal field, enter course # 3291 for one credit of Work of the Lawyer–Field or enter course # 3292 for two credits of Work of the Lawyer–Field. Students enrolling for one-credit of field work must complete 40 hours of field work; two-credits, 80 hours. If you do work in the legal field, your employment satisfies the field component of the course.
