Clinics Offer Real-World Experiences

Professor Juergens

Ann E. Juergens
Co-Director, Clinics, and Professor of Law

“One of my clinic students was walking out of housing court after winning a motion, and people were flocking to her from the back of the courtroom. They assumed she was a practicing attorney, and they were all asking her if she could represent them. That doesn’t happen all the time, but I think it happens earlier at William Mitchell than elsewhere.”

What others are saying

…about Mitchell grads

Judge Kathleen Gearin ’75
Ramsey County District Court,
St. Paul, Minn.

“I see many Mitchell graduates in the courtroom arguing motions and handling cases, and I must say that Mitchell’s trial advocacy and clinical programs make it possible for graduates to be more comfortable in a courtroom. Mitchell students get real courtroom experience before they even graduate that gives them an advantage over students from other law schools. The clinical program at Mitchell is so well established and is led by outstanding faculty who continue to make it even better than when I was a student there more than 30 years ago when Justice Rosalie Wahl was my clinical professor. If it wasn’t for her guidance and inspiration, I don’t know if I would have become a trial lawyer.”

Opportunities to engage our students outside the classroom

In addition to hiring associates or attorneys, your office can participate in the following:

Externships and Clinics
Students work for academic credit as clerks, advocates, or research assistants with judges, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations.

Apprenticeships
This program matches 2Ls and 3Ls with practicing attorneys for active participation, critical observation, and the nurturing of a professional mentoring relationship.

Mentoring
Small groups of first-year students are matched with a pair of recent alumni attorneys. Throughout the year, students and mentors attend events on campus and plan experiences that help students transition into law school.

Job Shadowing
Students shadow a practicing attorney over spring break. Students spend a day in courtroom proceedings, negotiations, touring law firms, and participating in informational interviews.
