A Degree of Practical Wisdom
The William Mitchell JD is centered on a quality we call “practical wisdom.” Practical wisdom is know-how in the richest sense: you know how to practice law skillfully; you know how to engage constructively with clients, colleagues, and the legal system; you know how to think about the law with breadth and depth; and you know how to reflect on and learn from your professional experiences.
Our emphasis on practical lawyering skills infuses the curriculum and philosophy of teaching. From our writing and trial advocacy program to our clinic program, our curriculum combines skills training with a focus on ethics and legal theory, preparing you to be a powerful advocate and counselor for your clients. You will have done many of the things you will do as a lawyer before you even graduate: researching cases, counseling clients, negotiating deals, writing legal briefs, and appearing before judges.
Right from the start, your William Mitchell education integrates the study of law with preparing to practice it. Below are just some of the courses that incorporate practice skills.
