An institution connected to the profession

Professor Ken Port talking with students after class

You won’t find an ivory tower at William Mitchell. But you will find faculty who are scholars as well as skilled legal practitioners. You’ll find adjunct professors who spend their days in courtrooms and their free time in our classrooms, sharing real-world experience with students. And you’ll often run into many of our more than 11,000 alumni, who frequently stop by campus to mentor students, talk about job opportunities, and provide advice.

Because our curriculum is based on Practical Wisdom (the idea that students need to understand both legal theory and how to put the law to work after graduation), we’re constantly looking for ways to keep Mitchell and its students connected to the legal profession. Here’s how:

Our faculty

Open the newspaper or turn on the evening news and chances are you’ll see a story about how Mitchell professors are working to shape laws, defend clients, or help the public understand important legal issues.

From working with lawmakers at the Capital to representing clients in court to traveling the world consulting with foreign governments, our professors work outside of the classroom. It keeps them sharp. It keeps them appraised of new developments in the law. And it allows them to let students in on cutting-edge legal developments and trends.

Our adjunct faculty

Mitchell adjunct faculty members are rooted in the real world of legal, judicial, and legislative practice. They serve on the bench and have careers at firms of all sizes. And they incorporate their real-world experience into their lessons.
