Connecting students with alumni

Your first year of law school can be a big adjustment. Sometimes you may want to talk to someone who can relate to the law school experience. You may be looking for study tips or career planning advice from someone who has been through it.

As a William Mitchell student, you have access to our large alumni network. Approximately 10,000 Mitchell grads work throughout the country as lawyers, teachers, businesspeople and in other professions. You won’t have to look far to find someone who can answer a question, provide job assistance or just understand what you are going through.

Find help through A-MAP

In the Alumni Mentor Advisors Program (A-MAP), small groups of 10-12 first-year students are matched with two alumni mentor advisors. The alums are recent grads, so they can provide they type of guidance, advice, and practical wisdom to help you succeed in law school.

Throughout the year, you can contact your mentor advisor as often or as little as you like. You can participate in organized student/alumni group events on campus, including a fall kick-off event, an informal happy hour, and a spring reception. If you want, you can contact a mentor individually by phone, e-mail, or for brief meetings.

If your needs change throughout the year, your mentor advisor is there to help any way they can. We encourage you to take advantage of this special opportunity to make professional and personal connections with Mitchell alumni.

You don’t have to sign up to receive a mentor because as a first-year student, you are automatically assigned a mentor as part of your required WRAP class.

You can continue your alumni advisor connection throughout your years at Mitchell or use other alumni resources.

Use the Alumni Resource Directory

If you want to talk to someone in a specific area of practice or with a certain skill set, you can use Mitchell’s extensive Alumni Resource Directory. It is a comprehensive database of alumni who are available to meet with you one-on-one or help in other ways.

Use the directory to find an alum to discuss your particular area of interest, to accompany you to a bar association meeting or court hearing, or help you prepare for a job interview.
